Centrifuge Workshop: developing an aesthetic II

Posted in Experimental Music, free improvisation, news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 9, 2015 by electronicmusik

I took part in a fantastic improvisation workshop on Saturday (6th June) organised by the ever enterprising Centrifuge (Phil Morton et al).

Held at the MMU campus in Crewe, it was a chance to play and talk about performance in the here and now. Turned out to be a most thought provoking day with great contributions from all concerned. Took copious notes for further study. Great to perform a duo with Steve Lewis (voice) and a trio with Bruce Coates and Mark Haslip (saxes)

As well as performing Alex Cutteridge took these amazing photos

New CD from Wire Assembly on Found Property Label FP14

Wire Assembly the free improvising guitar trio based in Sheffield have a new CD out on Found Property as of February 2014.

A recent Review of the last Wire Assembly release said:

The playing is a pleasure to listen to. The improvisations never lose focus or momentum—all three guitarists are adept at throwing out and accepting gambits, and often finishing each other’s phrases while doing so. The tasks of comping, playing single note lines and even hinting at a bassline—as Jasnoch does on occasion—are continually shifted around, keeping the sound moving ahead. Particularly exciting are those moments when a spontaneous, obliquely jazz-like chord progression breaks out, as when Jasnoch and Simpson do the free improv equivalent of chase choruses over Carver’s motile harmonies. Mopomoso Tour – not to be missed April 2012

Posted in blog, Experimental Music, free improvisation, gigs, live music, news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 6, 2013 by electronicmusik

Co-produced with Sound and Music and supported by Arts Council England, Mopomoso’s first ever UK tour will take place between 23rd and 30th of April 2013.

Each night of the tour will be unique as local musicians from each city join the line-up.
With a firm focus on free improvisation, musical references could range from jazz, rock,
folk, classical, electronic, world and computer-generated music, representing the broad
brush stroke spirit of inclusion embodied in the Mopomoso aesthetic.

Not to be missed, a superb array of the UK’s top improvisors, I’ll be at the Sheffield one for sure !

Founded in 2008, Classwar Karaoke is a label dedicated to the release of experimental music and short-films; principally, by means of a series of ongoing quarterly surveys, made available via sites such as internet archive, myspace, discogs, youtube, lastfm, facebook, sonic squirrel, reverbnation, soundcloud etc, under Creative Commons license 3.0. All material remains the property of the respective artists and is offered for free download in line with this license. The Surveys published so far feature artists from all over the world; and the material in total represents significant documentation of the experimental scene itself. Involvement in the project has helped spawn many fruitful collaborations, live-shows and a vibrant exchange of ideas; so much so that, for several repeat-participants, Classwar Karaoke is as much a collective as it is a community and also a mechanism for the release of new material
