Mopomoso Tour – not to be missed April 2012

Posted in blog, Experimental Music, free improvisation, gigs, live music, news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 6, 2013 by electronicmusik

Co-produced with Sound and Music and supported by Arts Council England, Mopomoso’s first ever UK tour will take place between 23rd and 30th of April 2013.

Each night of the tour will be unique as local musicians from each city join the line-up.
With a firm focus on free improvisation, musical references could range from jazz, rock,
folk, classical, electronic, world and computer-generated music, representing the broad
brush stroke spirit of inclusion embodied in the Mopomoso aesthetic.

Not to be missed, a superb array of the UK’s top improvisors, I’ll be at the Sheffield one for sure !

Founded in 2008, Classwar Karaoke is a label dedicated to the release of experimental music and short-films; principally, by means of a series of ongoing quarterly surveys, made available via sites such as internet archive, myspace, discogs, youtube, lastfm, facebook, sonic squirrel, reverbnation, soundcloud etc, under Creative Commons license 3. All material remains the property of the respective artists and is offered for free download in line with this license. The Surveys published so far feature artists from all over the world; and the material in toto represents significant documentation of the experimental scene itself. Involvement in the project has helped spawn many fruitful collaborations, live-shows and a vibrant exchange of ideas; so much so that, for several repeat-participants, Classwar Karaoke is as much a collective as it is a community and also a mechanism for the release of new material.

Rhys Chatham’s Crimson Grail (UK Premiere) at Liverpool Cathedral

Posted in Art, blog, gigs, live music, news, Noise Research with tags , , , , , , , , , , on July 31, 2012 by electronicmusik

Just found out I’ve been accepted to perform as part of Rhys Chathams piece ‘Crimson Grail’ which gets it’s UK premiere at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral (14th September, 2012).

The ensemble features 100 guitars and 8 basses

Rhys Chatham’s career started as the piano tuner to the radical avant-garde composer La Monte Young. He quickly became established within the experimental music scene in New York whilst still in his teens, becoming the first Music Director of The Kitchen, the home to the New York art scene in the 1970’s. Here he presented works by over 250 composers working with everybody from Philip Glass and Sonic Youth to Robert Fripp of King Crimson whilst all the while creating his own compositions. Heavily influenced by both the early Ramones concerts he attended in his youth, his work expresses the sheer power of punk-rock whilst all the while being intertwined with the beautiful and precise nature of his minimalist contemporaries.

A Crimson Grail, due to its huge scale has only previously been performed twice, once in the Lincoln Center in New York and once in the Sacré-Cœur in Paris. For this, the third ever performance and UK premiere, one hundred volunteer guitarists and eight bassists will join Rhys Chatham and his team in a performance of A Crimson Grail in the glorious setting of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.”

Rhys Chatham’s A Crimson Grail for 100 guitars and 8 basses will be performed free as part of the Liverpool Biennial Launch Weekend 7.30pm @ the Anglican Cathedral Friday 14th September 2012
